Acid of The Mind

Alkalizing Is Not Just about Food

For my fourth day of juicing, I used a little too much red lentil hummus--but these new non-garbanzo hummuses (hummi?) are delicious!

A Busy Day

It was a super busy and full day, and I completed a couple projects I've dragged out too long. But, I didn't pay enough specific attention to alkalizing and "drank" too much red lentil hummus and not enough SuperGreens. My weight plateaued and I felt less hydrated. A bad day? No. Could have been more alkalizing? Yes.

My attention to juicing slipped. The day was alkalizing but the juicing was less so, and reminds me that it isn't just about the food: We eat alkalizing foods because of our intentions. This will continue until it becomes a solid HABIT.

Call to Action!

What are you deciding on today?
Make that decision and cut off everything else.

For me, today I decide to hydrate with SuperGreens.

Three Alkalizing Juice Fast Days

Decisions Make All The Difference

This alkalizing SuperGreens juice fast seems to be "easier" than past ones...

Figuring out why might help others, but sometimes it's hard to understand it when you're right in the middle of things.

However, it feels like it helps to decide anew every day: "Today, I'm juice fasting."
No expectations, no pressure, no worrying for the future or for a specific outcome other than taking juice (okay, and some edamame hummus!).

Alkaline Juice Fasting Results - Day 2

Day Two Way Better Than Expected!

I was pretty much thinking I might cave in to some bacon, but on my morning walk I decided to decide on continuing my Alkalarian juice fast, and I'm glad I did. Almost every symptom diminished or went away--not to say they won't be back if/as I continue, but it was nice not to have so many food cravings.
"A true decision involves cutting off every  other possibility."

Here's what helped the cravings today:

  • Continued LL Chromium/ Vanadium
  • Continued SuperGreens
  • Eating 2 tablespoons three times in the day of edamame hummus (see pic below)
I know this might be cheating, sort of, but the hummus was not chickpeas/garbanzo beans, which are slightly acidic. No, they were this wonderful creation I found in a mainstream grocery store: edamame hummus
Soy beans (edamame) are very alkaline--maybe less so when processed a bit, bit it was delicious, my digestive system didn't have to work to hard since it was pureed, and the taste was terrific.
I highly recommend this jewel of a food and plan to use it again today and continue my juice fast.

Happy Alkalizing!

Alkalizing Juice Fasting Results

The Alkalizing Green Vegetable Juicing Results Are In

"Symptoms" of Juicing and Detoxing

  • Less bloated feeling
  • Slight headache several times during the day
  • Craved bacon for a little while
  • Tongue felt "weird"
  • Increased focus (working on blog and other alkalizing activities)

Cravings Relief

Ok, I craved bacon but also I craved the desire to look around at food in my kitchen. I always caught myself though, and I turned this into a reminder to do one of three things:
  1. Make or Drink more SuperGreens
  2. Put a few drops of Chromium/Vanadium under my tongue
  3. Get back to working on the blog

Call to Action!

If you're having trouble staying on an Alkalarian Journey, turn triggers for "relapse" into "reminders" to do something alkalizing.

And here's the link to the Chromium/Vanadium drops, which helped me with reducing cravings:

One Day "Cleanse" = One Day Juice Fast

I'm taking Tony Robbins' advice and deciding to master this plateau...
No Quitting, No Stressing

Mastery

Mastering a plateau means following the successful example of someone who's done this before me. A person who exemplifies good health, balance, distinctions of knowledge about health, and shares their insights and example willingly.

I can take my pick from these four strong Alkalarian candidates:
Anthony Robins

Rosalina Hom

Shelly Redford Young & Dr. Robert Young

Action Plan?

So, my plan of action is to take a one-day SuperGreens fast and see how it goes. I expect my acidic patterns will make me feel bored and tempt me to eat. I will be working on my alkalizing blog most of the day, so that will help me stay reminded. I will also listen to positive music and use LL Chromium/Vanadium to balance any acidic food cravings. I'll let you know how it goes tomorrow and see if another day of juicing is in the cards!

Summary of Helps

(PS: Just so you know, I haven't talked to these guys and they aren't endorsing me or anything like that... They are simply some role models of mine, and I'm sharing that fact here.)

Take Heart During Alkalarian Plateaus

I think I've reached an Alkalarian Plateau: A little tired again, no additional weight loss, a few acidic "slips..." What to do?

A plateau is a time period in which you're working just as hard as ever, but your progress slows or stops (momentarily). There are three responses to plateaus, and I talk about them briefly.

Wishing, Hoping, Avoiding, Taking Action

It's a drizzling early morning...

Lots of acid in my environment in the past few days, and I used a combination of wishing, hoping, avoiding, and taking action.

Guess Which One Worked Better Than The Others?

Ummmm... that'd be the taking action option. But you probably saw that coming!

The action that helped me the most this week so far? Meditation

Cigarette Smoking and Alkalizing?

There's no way around... cigarette smoking is acidic.
But there's no way around the fact that quitting smoking is HARD.

Just Drink SuperGreens?

Well, when I was a smoker, I drank a lot of alkalizing SuperGreens to cleanse and balance me out, and while that didn't empty my lungs and blood of noxious cigarette toxins, I think it helped me some. I guess I aspire to be a purist, but I'm in Generation X, and we are, at the heart most things, practical.
So, I have these two questions:
  • Is smoking and using SuperGreens the best thing? No
  • Is smoking and using SuperGreens while you smoke or try to quit smoking better than just smoking? I think YES!

So, Attention All Smokers:

  • You are welcome here.
  • You will not be shamed.
  • Any step you take toward alkalizing is a GOOD thing.

Have You Decided to Quit?

If you haven't, that's fine... you know the pros and cons. But if you have decided and it's just really hard, then get this book immediately (I used the audio version):
Easy Way to Stop Smoking

Salad for Breakfast!?

Yes! Wake up, Americans and anybody else who eats like us ;)

We don't have to eat pastry and other acidic, sugary breakfast foods. It's conditioning that makes you want that. Try a salad for breakfast one day instead, and see what happens.
It's so much better for you!

Call to Action!

1. Prepare a salad this afternoon or evening to eat tomorrow morning

2. Suggestion: Use lettuce or greens, bell peppers (any color), tomato, cucumber, olive oil, Liquid Aminos or light soy sauce, and one sprinkle topping (e.g., shredded cheese, sliced almonds, etc.)

You'll have more time today on the weekend, and it'll be ready for you in the morning after you wake up (and before any acid can talk you out of it!)

Early Weight Loss While Alkalizing!

A little unexpected early result:

Four pounds of weight loss after alkalizing for two weeks! :)

This is despite a super busy week!

Need some help with acidic food cravings?

Now, I try not to "hawk" or push products too much here, but I do know that when you start your Alkalarian transition, sugar and/or (i.e., acid) cravings can kick in and feel real problematic.

One of the InnerLight products that can help, though, is LL Chromium/Vanadium:
LL Chromium Vanadium

Chromium helps the insulin metabolize fat, turn protein into muscle, and convert sugar into energy. The two minerals together also play an important role in lowering LDL cholesterol and increasing HDL cholesterol. Put 3-6 drops under your tongue 3-4 times a day, and it can give you a little decrease in acid cravings that'll help you out.

If you're looking for a "weight loss bundle" from InnerLight products, I highly recommend purchasing the LL Chromium/Vanadium along with the CornerStone Bundle for an great alkalizing start to your journey.

An Alkalizing Sunrise

It's a great day for alkalizing!

Your physical environment supports acid or alkalizing almost as much as any food you eat (or don't eat).
Today, I started earlier than usual because the sunrise was so peculiarly bright and orange (even though it doesn't show that well in the video!).

It's supposed to be another busy day, but I've DECIDED to take ALKALIZING ACTIONS!
You can, too!

Call to Action!

  • Look for ways to observe and notice alkalizing things in nature after you read this.
  • Post what you notice in the comments below for all of us to become inspired.

Alkalarian Self-Care: Biking

It's a hot, humid, great holiday end to the long weekend that I'm finishing with a rhythmic, moving activity that helps promote breathing, movement of lymph, mindfulness and general good health: Biking
Minneapolis is a very bike-friendly community, and there are lots of alkalizing-promoting bike trails along creeks, lakes, bike boulevards spaced regularly throughout neighborhoods, and Nice Ride (a non-profit bike sharing system sponsored by HealthPartners insurance company).

Other Self-Care

This is a quick post, but I wanted to follow-up with more self-care inspirations. I made a quick, highly alkalizing salad (except for one tiny ingredient, which I'll explain):
I used organic mixed greens, heirloom cherry tomatoes, cucumber, celery, organic green peppers (red peppers would also work well), olive oil, and Bragg's Liquid Aminos.
Ummmm... I also sprinkled a little mozzarella cheese on this salad. While cheese isn't alkalizing by itself, I still more than followed Dr. Robert Young's rule that 80%+ of a meal should be uncooked and alkaline.
It was delicious!

Making Acid Out of Nothing at All

Craving Annihilation

Frequently, I find myself desiring things to go away, stop, or be done. Sometimes I desire this vigorously. This, of course, creates stress and pain, because mostly things don't go away, stop, or be done when I need them to (which is actually a want rather than a need).
Annihilation
Annihilation - © 2005 effervescence.co.uk
This desire (sometimes called a desire for annihilation in Buddhism) contributes to the pain or maybe even creates it in the first place.

Beware! It's just another acidic cycle!

Craving the annihilation or removal of something--even a stressor--creates pain.
Why? Because we aren't dealing with the stress--we're just wishing, hoping, and engaging with the pain.

This reminds me of a great quote I first read in Stephen King's memoir: "Wish in one hand, spit in the other--see which one fills up faster!"

The way out of this cycle is two-fold:

(1) Mindful Awareness and (2) Taking Action

Mindful Awareness

For me, the awareness recently has come from my morning walking meditations (formerly known as "walks"). When my mind and thoughts were a jumble from overwhelming stress, the awareness came from using the Wild Divine software (Relaxing Rhythms), which taught me meditative techniques and mindful awareness to calm my mind.

Taking Action

For me, the action has been to focus, think about and "do" more alkaline behaviors and activities. I hope these videos inspire others or at least create some curiosity, but my initial thought was that this is an alkalizing action I can take and hold myself accountable to.

What do you do to make yourself feel accountable in a positive, non-shaming, non-blaming way?
If you want to comment on that, I'd be interested to know what others have tried that works or didn't work--no failures here, just learning.

Thanks, and have an alkalizing day!

Power Questions for an Alkalarian Lifestyle

Power Questions and Positive Mental State (PMS)

So, my body feels slightly better, but my mind feels "more better" (I used to have a client who would say that, lol). The improvement came to me by a reminder from Tony Robbins' Facebook page (his influence is showing up in many of my blog posts, huh?).

The Power of Questions

Tony recommends using Power Questions to point you in a direction you want to go. Usually, we ask ourselves negative, circular or pointless questions such as "Why can't I do more alkalizing activities?" However, a better question for that topic is "How can I have more alkalizing activities in my life?"
Can you see the difference the wording makes? Sure, it's a technique, but so is the negative way to frame a question.
Power Questions for Alkaline, Alkalizing, and the Alkalarian Lifestyle
Power Questions for the Alkalarian Lifestyle

Power Questions

So a Power Question is a question that points you in a deliberate direction toward a state of mind you want or need to embody.
Power Questions I developed back in 1998 are listed below, and they still work for me. When I remember, I use 5-10 minutes in the morning (or whenever) to ask myself these questions, waiting until I get concrete answers floating into my head before going to the next one.

  • What am I proud of?
  • What an I excited about?
  • What makes me feel loved?
  • What am I grateful for?
  • What makes me feel happy?

Alkalarian Breathing

Do You Really Know How to Breathe?

I used to think I knew how to breathe, and even recommended controlled breathing to others in my practice. But I didn't know what I was doing. There are three main varieties of breathing style I use (besides unconscious breathing, which happens most of the time), and today I'll teach the one I learned from Tony Robbins back in 1997 or 1998.

  • Breathe in as you count to 4
  • Hold the breath as you count to 12
  • Release the breath as you count to 8
  • Repeat 5-10 times in a row throughout the day as you think of it

You can count quickly or slowly or whatever pace in between works for you, but just stay the same pace for each of the steps until you complete a single cycle. Try to stay consistent, but if you feel any discomfort, then obviously stop or speed up the pace. Obviously, do not try this if you have any breathing problem or suspect that you might.

You may well feel a little dizzy for a few seconds if you don't regularly breath deeply. This is simply your body getting more oxygen. Take a pause until it passes, then continue. (If dizziness or discomfort persists, then please consult your healthcare provider.)

Alkalizing should be a gentle process at this stage.

A Walking Meditation for My Alkalarian Journey

Hurry Up and Slow Down!

I was first introduced to walking meditation about four years ago (I know... I'm often late to things like this) at the New York Insight Meditation Center, which I visited on a lark one day. I'd already had a little experience with insight meditation from a neurofeedback specialist and an acupuncturist, but the walking meditation opened more doors.
If you'd like some advice about it from somebody way smarter than me, then click for Thich Nhat Hanh's Guide to Walking Meditation.

What I Noticed on My Walking Meditation

But was already there the many times I'd walked that way before during this summer:

Acid-Alkaline Rating Scale (AARS)

Acid-Alkaline Rating Scale (AARS)

Maybe something like this has been done before--and if so, I apologize--but I haven't seen one so I just created this handy scale to track your subjective acid-alkaline feeling sense.
This isn't scientific, and it may change some, but for now it's a Zero (0) to Ten (10) Likert scale:
  • 0 = The worst, most acidic you have ever felt with significant disease
  • 5 = Mid-Point: not feeling terrible or stressed but knowing/suspecting you can feel better
  • 10 = The best, most energetic with complete vitality you have ever felt
Today in the video, I gave myself a five, but after working out the scale numbers, I would revise it to a four. As I continue on the Alkalarian Journey, I'll try and revise it and fill in the number gaps in between these three benchmark points.

Rapid Total Body Detox Cleanse

This is working okay--not too strong, not too weak. A full-out SuperGreens cleanse is stronger than this (so far), if you're wondering about a comparison. (Here is info on the 7-Day SuperGreens Cleanse.)

Sick & Tired of Being Sick & Tired

Today I noticed--again--that I had to "warm up" my muscles, my mind, my body, my heart...

But today, I also noticed that I'm tired of that. And I think I'm also sick of it.

Seems like the time to start a change.

Do we usually wait for something dramatic to happen--like a breakthrough moment maybe--before changing? The thing is, this might just be the breakthrough. Maybe I found it amid life's chaos, in the stillness of a city park while taking a random break from an early morning walk.

The little things add up. So I'm going to add up a lot of small alkaline choices over the next few days and see what happens.

The Beginner's Guide to Alkalizing

Problems Beginners Face

Many people want to try SuperGreens, but the "trumpet blast" for an alkaline lifestyle turns them off.
Common Beginner Alkalizing Lifestyle Problem
© Depositphotos.com / noblige
Sure, I should drink eight glasses of water and exercise 30 minutes and eat vegetables and sleep eight hours and monitor my pH level and balance the stress in my life every day... But I can't do that!!

And you're right. In our busy world, it's too much to do all at once, so one of two things happen:
  1. You never start (Overwhelmed with all the advice) or
  2. You quit (Discouraged from too much advice)
Either way, you miss out on any alkalizing benefits and get trapped in a cycle of acidic failure and avoidance--the exact opposite of your goal.

Common Beginner Mistakes

Mistakes in Alkalizing Goal Setting
© Depositphotos.com / PixelsAway
While it's important to have an alkalizing lifestyle, changing everything at once is too much. In fact, reading about everything at once can be too much for many of us. While huge change is possible, we're just not naturally geared for changes that are too big, too many, or not specific. Goal-setting can help, but sometimes we don't even get around to writing them down.

Don't make the mistake of taking on too much at first. Instead, try these three simple steps...
© Depositphotos.com / PixelsAway

Three Beginner Steps to Avoid Failure

1. Don't order the biggest SuperGreens package

  • You don't need the most expensive SuperGreens products to get started.
  • If you do feel super committed though, then I recommend the US$153 SuperGreens Economy Bundle (it comes with a water bottle--see #2 below).

2. Mix your SuperGreens in a water bottle (it's totally easier)

  • If you have a water bottle, I recommend buying the CornerStone Bundle for US$49.
  • If you need a water bottle, I recommend the Starter Bundle for US$52 (the extra three dollars gets you a water bottle, a CD with an alkalizing pep talk, and an alkalizing booklet).

3. Mix your SuperGreens into water and something else to get used to the taste

  • SuperGreens will taste new to you (i.e., different), unless you've used green drinks before or eat a lot of green vegetables.
  • Beginners: Mix your SuperGreens into tomato juice instead of water at first. I started alkalizing in 1997 doing it this way. About a week later, I realized I enjoyed green vegetables, and moved on to lemon juice (next step).
  • Experienced Beginners: Mix your SuperGreens with water and a few drops of lemon juice (I was surprised how much this changes the taste).
  • Once you drink SuperGreens for about two weeks, it will taste familiar (i.e., good) to your taste buds.
  • Warning: Some green drinks add in apple juice or a sweetener, so they'll taste "familiar." This just means your taste buds taste the sugar, but this cancels out the alkalizing effects of SuperGreens. Avoid mixing sweeteners into the drink.
(One last note... Folks will often ask if they need the Prime pH. Here's the deal: No. It's a great product, but if you're needing to be economical, then I recommend substituting a few drops of lemon juice. I heard Dr. Young himself say in 1998 that lemon or lime juice will help alkalize the water, and I'm sure it still applies.)

Okay then, let's get started!
